You sometimes get hurt, I get hurt, we have all gotten hurt sometime in our lives. That is inevitable. And of course, you want to know what to do in any given circumstance (or if you need to help someone). Well, there have been lots of recommendation on what to do and how to do it, and although the point of the good and a bad advice are, all the same, the outcome is always different. Yes, the bad advice can bring you to some really bad outcomes.

We have collected 10 pieces of advice to break the myths about first aid so that you know what to do, next time you or someone else needs help.

Why Not To Do It?

If you make a single wrong move, you may injure your eye.

What to do?

Cover the eye with gauze and go see a doctor. (no pun intended) Only if you’ve gotten some chemical into your eye, wash it immediately with clean water.

Why Not To Do It?

A warm cloth will not help you with sprained muscle. It will only lead to an even worse swelling.

What to do?

Apply anything cold to the place of injury. It will help you with inflammation and pain too. Don’t use that limb too much.

Setting a Bone on Your Own

Why Not To Do It?

You may induce some additional injuries.

What to do?

Just immobilize the injured limb and help the victim to get to the hospital. Immobilization has to be done gently and very carefully. And don’t forget to immobilize the two closest joints as well.

Using Some Butter or Sour Cream to Treat Burns

Why Not To Do It?

The only thing why you will feel better after applying this is because it is colder than your burn. However, it will only create a film and make the heat go deeper and do more damage.

What to do?

Hold that burned part of your body in cold water for 15 minutes. And don’t make any damages to blisters because they are there to protect you from infections.

How To Properly “lift up” an Unconscious Person

Why Not To Do It?

If someone faints don’t sprinkle them with cold water (it will only cause muscle spasms) and don’t try lifting them up. Also, when that someone regains consciousness, don’t let them drink coffee or any of the energy drinks. That can only lead to dehydration.

What to do?

Lift the person’s legs up, unbutton any tight items of clothing, and keep them on the ground for some time.

Rubbing a Person Suffering From a Fever With Alcohol or Vinegar

Why Not To Do It?

Vinegar and alcohol are easily absorbed into the skin. If you rub the alcohol on someone’s body it could become intoxicated and if you rub vinegar it will raise the acidity too much.

What to do?

A patient should drink a lot of fluids and the room should be cooled to somewhere around 63°F. They should be able to get over the fever by themselves (if it is not too high).

Applying Ice To Bruise

Why Not To Do It?

Ice will help with bruises but it could also burn if it is applied directly.

What to do?

Put the ice inside some cloth and only then apply it on the skin. Let it sit there for 20 minutes, remove it, wait for 20 minutes and repeat that several times.

Pulling Out Objects From Wounds

Why Not To Do It?

You may pull out some smaller splinters from a finger or some tiny parts of glass from a hand but don’t pull out objects out from serious wounds. The patient may bleed out to death.

What to do?

However scary that wound may be, take the injured person to the hospital and don’t help them pull that object out of their body.

Applying Some Ointment to a Wound

Why Not To Do It?

The wound will heal better on fresh air.

What to do?

Clean the wound with cool water and soap. Let it dry and dress it up with a clean bandage.

Using Stitches instead of Skin Glue to Close Wounds

Why Not To Do It?

Putting stitches and removing them really hurts! The process of applying skin glue is painless and very quick.

What to do?

The first thing you need to do is to stop the bleeding. Do that by applying pressure to the wound. Then close the edges of the wound and apply skin glue. Wait until it is fully dried out.
